CY DECOSSE: FIFTEEN FLOWERS
April 09 - May 14, 2010
OPENING RECEPTION
FRIDAY, April 9, FROM 6:00-8:30 PM

Weinstein Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of large format Gum Dichromate photographs by internationally acclaimed Minnesota-based photographer Cy DeCosse. Renowned for his floral images and the exquisite quality of his prints, DeCosse has selected fifteen recent photographs for this installation that have been printed using the Three-Color Gum Dichromate technique, a print process dating to the 19th century.

In 2001, in collaboration with master printer Keith Taylor, DeCosse began the revival of this arduous and difficult technique that results in extraordinary rich tonalities. Working together, DeCosse and Taylor have produced groundbreaking photographs, comparable to the platinum prints they made in the 1990s that brought DeCosse recognition through the United States and in Europe.

In The Journal of Contemporary Photography Volume IV, noted art and photography historian John Wood writes, "The most striking visual features of a DeCosse print are its subtle nuances of tone and texture. There is a luminosity in the lights and velvet depth to the dark that can take your breath and that is simply not present in the work of any other photographic artist. I want to actually feel those dark, textured leaves, to really enter DeCosse's garden. DeCosse brings a virtually unheard of level of craftsmanship to his art."

In 2009, DeCosse was the subject of a major retrospective at the Academia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence, Italy, and his work has been widely exhibited in museums and galleries. His unique photographs have been reproduced and discussed in numerous articles and publications.
