Weinstein Gallery is pleased to present new watercolor paintings by David Rathman.
OPENING RECEPTION WITH THE ARTIST
THURSDAY, MAY 19 from 6:00-8:00pm
Weinstein Gallery is pleased to present The Other Side Of Sunday, an exhibition of 17 new watercolor paintings by Minnesota-based and nationally exhibited artist David Rathman.
With The Other Side Of Sunday, David Rathman, one of the leading painters living and working in the Midwest, re-examines and reinterprets themes found throughout his career, especially the image of the cowboy and American West. He writes of his fascination with the cowboy, "The long ride with the cowboy work stems from my love of westerns and all things cinematic. After awhile, I realized it wasn't necessarily about cowboys; the subjects were just vehicles for an adopted attitude, and there was room for my sideways humor."
In this exhibition, Rathman has exponentially expanded the size of the image and he paints with a much looser style of brushwork. He writes of using watercolor, "I absolutely love ink and watercolor; I always have. Watercolor and ink have a mind of their own; as you paint you watch with amazement as the pigment pools, swirls and explodes. You end up with something unexpected and not of your hand."
Rathman received his BFA from the Minneapolis college of Art and Design and has received numerous awards throughout his career, including the McKnight Foundation Fellowship, Bush Foundation Visual Arts Fellowship, and Jerome Foundation Fellowship. He has exhibited at Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, Walker Art Center, and the Arts Center of St. Petersburg, Florida. His solo exhibitions at major art galleries have received critical acclaim in Los Angeles and New York City. His work is featured in the permanent collections of numerous museums throughout the United States, including the Walker Art Center, Whitney Museum of American Art, J. Paul Getty Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago.
